What is an ark?

An ark is a large, typically wooden vessel built to transport animals, supplies, and people safely during a flood or other natural disaster. The most famous ark is the biblical Noah's Ark, described in the Book of Genesis as a massive boat built by the prophet Noah to survive a global flood.

Noah's ark is said to have housed pairs of every animal species on Earth, as well as Noah's family and enough food and supplies to sustain them for the duration of the flood. The ark was constructed according to specific dimensions given by God, and it served as a means of salvation for those on board.

In addition to its religious significance, the story of Noah's Ark has inspired artwork, literature, and films for centuries. The concept of an ark has also been used metaphorically to refer to any refuge or safe haven in times of trouble.
